When it comes to eye health, how often do you think about food? It may sound strange, but what you eat can have an impact on your eyes as well as your overall body health.

Most healthy foods contain vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are key to the health of our organs, and our eyes are no different. You could be eating foods containing these key nutrients without even realising it and helping to maintain you eye function at the same time!

Nutrients such as lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin A, vitamin C and Omega-3 fatty acids are incredibly important to help maintain eye function, reduce the development of age-related degenerative diseases and protect your eyes from harmful light.

So where can these nutrients be found?

There are many different types of fruit, vegetables, dairy and fish products that contain one or multiple nutrients that are beneficial to your eyes.

Leafy Green Vegetables

Green vegetables such as spinach and kale are the powerhouses of nutrition and are packed full of health benefits. These veggies contain an abundance of nutrients such as lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamin C providing a protective antioxidant for your eyes.

Fatty Fish

Oily fish such as tuna, salmon, herring, and mackerel are high in omega-3 fatty acid. A diet containing high levels of omega-3 have been shown to reduce the risk of age-related macular issues.

Egg Yolks

Egg yolks contain the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin. Carotenoids help to reduce the risk of age-related concerns such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts and are best consumed with natural fats – so great for eggs and avocado on toast.

Orange Coloured Fruit and Vegetables

Fruit and vegetables that are orange, get their colour from beta-carotene which is a type of vitamin A. Of all the vitamins, vitamin A is incredibly important to include in your diet as it supports the function of the cornea and helps to protect the eyes from age-related concerns.

Citrus Fruit and Berries

Vitamin C is also incredibly beneficial for your eye health and can be found in citrus fruits and red berries. They are a great source of anti-oxidants, which play a key part in helping to lower the risk of developing some eye diseases and reducing the progression of age-related conditions.

These are just a few examples of the different foods that are rich in nutrients that benefit the health of the eye. Your overall health is incredibly important and a balanced diet, regular exercise and drinking plenty of water will help to support and maintain your eye health.
